Dear list members,
For you and your students: This June, we explore stories that ask tough questions about life. Prof. Saul Morson (Northwestern University) navigates texts from Swift through Chekhov to Borges in search for guidance on topics such as the end of life, the nature of wisdom, and the world of others.
This cycle of lectures, The Genre of Philosophical Story around the World, will take place on June 4, 11, 18, 25 (5:00-6:30pm EDT). It will consider a form of narrative present in cultures around the world, the philosophical story. These stories pose questions about life that are of the utmost importance and yet are usually neglected. What is life’s meaning, how do we face our inevitable death, why is there evil and suffering, what does it mean to be human, and how should we live? We may disregard these questions as of no relevance to the practical affairs of life, but at some point – in illness, extreme misfortune, or the experience of unimagined cruelty – they strike us with special force. If we once saw them as simple or childish, we now confront complexities, depths, mysteries, and riddles. Philosophical stories help us probe those depths and so help us in our search for answers – or, at least, a better understanding of the questions.
Each session will include discussion of assigned readings.
There's just enough time to get ready for the first session. Come join Prof. Morson this Friday for the discussion of Leo Tolstoy's views on death. The assigned texts are the story “The Death of Ivan Ilych” and Anna Karenina, part 8, chs. 8-14, 19.
