Dear Social Policy Association Members,
I am very sorry to inform you all that our colleague Emeritus Professor Johnston Birchall has sadly passed away, having come to the end of a long term illness. Johnston was particularly known for his work on housing policy in the 1990s, as well as his later work on cooperatives. We were privileged to have him as a colleague at Stirling University and I’m sure he will be known and remembered fondly by many in the Social Policy community.
On a personal note, Johnston was a real inspiration to me as my PhD supervisor and teacher here at Stirling in regards to social policy and breaking the boundaries of policy silos. He was one of the kindest and most insightful people I have ever met. He will be very much missed.
Our colleague Richard Simmons ([log in to unmask]) is in touch with Johnston’s family and co-ordinating tributes/messages if anyone would like to send any to his friends and family at this sad time.
Best wishes,
Dr Vikki McCall
Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Stirling
