In a country where banking, medicine and engineering are viewed as the only credible professions for “men”, what happens to work and diversity in the creative industries? How can we begin to unpack deeply entrenched patriarchal practices in order to make conversations on toxic masculinity more commonplace? How can an alternative form of masculinity be articulated?
These questions have become pertinent, and they make up the substance of our very first Makings Journal Studio piece, the release of which we are pleased to announce. The Studio piece is a podcast titled: Man-up Please: Pakistan’s Fetish with Sons. Made by Saba Karim Khan, the podcast addresses issues of toxic/alternative masculinity within creative spaces and the wider society in South Asia, specifically Pakistan.
Saba is an author, award-winning filmmaker and educator. In the podcast, she discusses Pakistani toxic/alternative masculinity with Meesha Shafi (singer, actor, model), Asim Abbasi (filmmaker) and Awais Khan (author).
