Economic geology MRes opportunities at the University of Portsmouth, please pass onto interested graduating undergraduate Geoscience students.
We have several industry-supported Master of Research (MRes) projects available to study the genesis of gold mineralisation. These 12-month (full time) projects will work closely with industry partners on active exploration targets, with companies providing data, samples and research funding. Students will gain experience in both advanced research techniques and modern mineral exploration activities.
[Projects 1 & 2] Orogenic gold petrogenesis and prospectivity of the Bibemi region of northern Cameroon. Principal supervisor James Darling [log in to unmask]
Two projects are available, both working closely with Oriole Resources PLC (https://orioleresources.com/) to study orogenic gold mineralisation in the Neoproterozoic Central African Fold Belt of Northern Cameroon. These will compare mineralisation and alteration styles between gold-bearing veins across four main prospects in the Bibemi region; utilising the latest petrological, microstructural and microchemical analysis techniques.
[Project 3] Multi-geochronometer approach to dating timing of gold mineralisation in the Nucleus deposit, Dawson Range, Yukon, Canada. Principal supervisor Catherine Mottram [log in to unmask]
This project will work closely with Triumph Gold Corp., (https://triumphgoldcorp.com/) and will focus on developing geochronology tools to increase the efficiency of commodity exploration models. The project will apply multi-phase U-Pb geochronology by laser ablation ICP-MS, including novel tools to understand the timing, duration and longevity of epithermal gold mineralisation in the Yukon, Canada.
