KTH Royal Institute of Technology is opening a new position as Assistant Professor in Railway Signalling Systems and Traffic Control within the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering, Division of Transport Planning.

Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.
Subject description:
The subject covers technology, processes and systems for traffic control of rail traffic, which includes rail, metro, tramway and other rail systems for passenger or freight transport. In addition, traffic management, signalling systems (development, implementation, operation and maintenance, capacity and punctuality), signal safety and reliability are included, as well as new functions such as floating blocks, virtually connected trains, automatic train operation and intelligent traffic control systems.
Duties:
The position includes research and teaching in the subject area. In research, the assistant professor is expected to contribute to ongoing research projects as well as to seek external funding and conduct research in close collaboration with partners within and outside KTH.
The assistant professor is expected to teach at the undergraduate, advanced level and postgraduate level in the subject. This includes the development of existing and new courses. In addition, the assistant professor is expected to contribute to the operation and further development of subject-specific educational programs in collaboration with the industry and to supervise degree projects and doctoral students in the subject area. Some administrative tasks are also included. The assistant professor is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within four years. If necessary, a language plan is drawn up as support at the time of employment.
The assistant professor will be given opportunity to develop their independence as researcher and gain accreditation that may allow them to take other teaching positions with higher eligibility requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). Following application, the assistant professor can apply for promotion to associate professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Eligibility:
An individual who has obtained a PhD or equivalent research expertise is qualified for appointment as an assistant professor. Candidates who met those qualifications within five years prior to expiration of the application period should be prioritised. Other candidates may also be considered if there are extraordinary grounds for doing so. Extraordinary grounds refer to illness, parental leave or similar circumstances.
Time limitation:
The appointment is for an indefinite term, but no more than six years, and may be extended if, due to the teacher’s absence due to sick leave, parental leave or other special grounds, more time is required to reach the objectives of the appointment. However, the total appointment period may not exceed eight years. The appointment is part of the Tenure Track system at KTH and the assistant professor may apply for promotion to tenured associate professor.
