UK-Ireland Planning Conference 2021 8-10 Sep 2021
This is a kind reminder of the CfP for the Planning Research Conference being organised by Newcastle University on 8-10 September 2021. This year’s theme is ‘Re-imagining the Planning Project’ (see below), and the conference will be online. We welcome submissions from scholars based in and working on planning-related topics anywhere in the world.
In particular, we want to draw your attention to the track ‘Spatial Justice and Regional Inequalities’. We invite submissions based on theoretical and empirical work examining the relationship between planning and social justice. Linking to the wider theme of the conference we encourage contributors to reflect on the exposed fault lines and on the inequalities exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic in cities and regions. How is planning being (con)tested and remade on the ground? What are the emerging responses from communities and policy actors to deal with the consequences of the pandemic in cities and regions? Papers may examine, but are not limited to, debates around the right to the city, racial and ethnic inequalities, social movements and community mobilisation, urban governance, insurgent planning, and social and physical infrastructures. We accept papers focussed on any geographical location, and are keen to reflect worldwide debates on these issues.
We welcome the presentation of papers and/or the organisation of roundtable discussions. More details:

The UK-Ireland Planning Research Conference 2021
To mark the 75th anniversary of planning education at Newcastle University, the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape is pleased to host the 2021 UK-Ireland Planning Research Conference on 8-10 September, including the RTPI Awards for Planning Research Excellence, a PhD workshop and the Planning Schools Forum (Heads of Schools meeting).
The theme of the conference, Re-imagining the Planning Project, aims to stimulate discussions on how the progressive ideals of creating better places have evolved and what the future holds for the planning project. At a time when multiple and interrelated crises are having devastating effects on people’s lives and livelihoods and on places’ vibrancy and vitality, what could be the role and purpose of planning, and what values and ideals could motivate planning thoughts, educations and practices? We welcome papers that reflect on these and other critical questions about the future of the planning project, and look forward to welcoming you to the 2021 conference.
Professor Simin Davoudi and Dr Susannah Gunn
Submission of abstracts: 28th May 2021
