Dear Colleagues
Apologies for any cross posting.
You may be aware that the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Subject Benchmark Statements (SBS) for Geography are currently in the early stages of being reviewed. A review panel has been convened following a call for expressions of interest, and the initial meeting of the panel was held very recently. Information on the Review Panel can be found here https://www.qaa.ac.uk/quality-code/subject-benchmark-statements/sbs-reviews-2021
SBS define the academic standards in a specific subject that can be expected of a graduate, in terms of what they might know, do and understand at the end of their studies. In addition, they describe the nature and characteristics of a course or programme in that particular subject or area. For example, they are used as a point of reference for academic staff and HE providers in the design and development of degree programmes. The current SBS for Geography can be found here https://www.qaa.ac.uk/docs/qaa/subject-benchmark-statements/subject-benchmark-statement-geography.pdf
This review provides an opportunity to ensure the SBS reflect the current state of the discipline and meet the requirements of the subject community and key stakeholders. In addition to providing guidance on benchmarking and the distinctive features of the subject, following consultation the QAA, are keen that the SBS clearly address the themes of equality, diversity and inclusion, sustainability, disability and enterprise education.
The review will include a thorough redrafting of the SBS and, at this early stage in the process, the review panel would welcome early input from subject community on potential priority areas to consider during the review. There will be further consultation later in the year once the draft SBS have been produced.
To that end, the panel are welcoming responses to the questions below. These have been left suitably broad, so as to not unduly steer or limit feedback received.
1. What is good about the current SBS and should be retained?
2. Is there any current content that could be deleted or replaced?
3. Is there any content that is currently missing?
Feedback on these questions can be provided via completing the short survey here https://rgs-ibg.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/sbs This is hosted by the RGS-IBG and which can be done anonymously if you wish.
As a reminder, the current SBS for Geography can be found here https://www.qaa.ac.uk/docs/qaa/subject-benchmark-statements/subject-benchmark-statement-geography.pdf.
To help with the timeframe that the review panel is working to, feedback is welcomed up to 14th June 2021
Many thanks in advance and with best wishes.
Dr Graham Bird (Chair) on behalf of the Geography Review Panel.
