SPATIAL INEQUITIES POST COVID-19 – Virtual Conference

Among other correlates, the COVID-19 pandemic brought the social, economic, cultural, and political impacts threatening the lives around the globe. While still standing in amid way, this part of the conference initiates conversations related to the spatial impacts of COVID-19 concerning inequities in racial minorities, immigrants, women, poor, elderly, children, disabled, and homeless. While the fear of infection has added various levels of protective layers in the built-environment as a defense system to the virus, we could use this opportunity to make a positive transformation for future crises as well as alleviating current built-environmental concerns.
Our relationship to outdoor spaces such as streets, parks, public open spaces has changed since COVID 19 pandemic. To limit the spread of the virus, lockdowns and stay home measures were enforced reducing both physical and social connection to the outside world. Over the years, we have witnessed the positive impacts of parks, green areas, and playgrounds contributing to reducing mental health and wellness, supporting children’s development, and creating a social network or support systems within the communities. With the research indicating that the virus is less likely to transmit in the outdoor setting, the focuses of the built-environmental design have shifted to the innovative outdoor spaces.
In this conference, we discuss how the public health professionals, urban designers, architects, policymakers respond to the short, medium, and long-term strategies to maintain accessibility, flexibility, design, maintenance, and connectivity, and equitable contribution of such space would transform. Areas of interest include:
