----------------------------------
Hi everyone,
This is a final call for speakers to take part in our ‘Listening in the Disciplines’ event to take place on Friday 11th June from 15:30 to 17:00. So far, we provisionally have speakers talking about teaching listening to students in the disciplines of Business, STEMM, Fashion and English Literature. Therefore, we are now putting out a more limited call to invite anyone with experience with students in disciplines NOT listed above (e.g. Law, Design, Media and others) who might be interested in presenting at the event to get in touch. We are setting a final deadline of 10am (UK time) on Friday 21st May for people interested in presenting to get in touch. Please see more detailed information on the focus of the event below along with the link to register your interest in presenting at the event:
Call for Speakers: ‘Listening in the Disciplines’ Event
Provisional Date: Friday 11th June 2021
Provisional Time: 15:30-17:00
Platform: Zoom
The SIG Developing, Teaching and Testing Academic Listeners would like to run an event on ‘Listening in the Disciplines’. In organising this event, we hope to provide a space where colleagues with experience liaising with specific academic schools and delivering pre-sessional, in-sessional or module teaching to students in specific disciplines can share their experiences of the listening demands and needs of students studying in a variety of disciplines. In sharing this knowledge, EAP colleagues can develop a better understanding of how EAP content specific to the teaching and testing of listening can better meet the needs of their students.
Some of the questions we hope to address during this event are:
What types of listening do students in specific disciplines need to do during their studies? What are the main demands of these types of listening?
What specific areas of language/listening need to be developed with students on EAP pre-sessionals and in-sessionals so that they can listen successfully in their specific disciplines?
What is the role of listening in how students are taught and/or assessed in their specific disciplines?
If you have experience in teaching students who are going to study or are studying in a specific academic discipline and would be willing to share your knowledge during this event, we would really appreciate it. Please complete the following form with your details and we will be in touch as soon as possible.

The format for the event has not yet been fixed as this will depend to some extent on the number of colleagues who volunteer to share their knowledge. However, it is likely that we will begin with short presentations (5-10 minutes) followed by ample time for discussion in discipline-related breakout rooms before returning to the main room for final comments.
Many thanks
