Grenfell: crime, harm, social murder
Professor Steve Tombs
20th April 2021, 6pm BST on Zoom
Join Steve Tombs for a discussion of the fire at Grenfell Tower in June 2017.
"We can agree that the deaths of 72 residents in the fire at Grenfell Tower in June 2017 was and remains a tragedy of immense proportions. But how else can we frame this event, and what does justice in its aftermath look like? In this presentation I consider the events at Grenfell Tower in three ways: as a crime; as a product and source of social harm; and as what Engels’ referred to as ‘social murder’. Each raises different prospects for justice for the bereaved, the affected community and the nature of ‘justice’."
Steve Tombs is Professor of Criminology at the School of Social Sciences & Global Studies at the Open University.
