Women in German Studies (WIGS) Special Panel on Diversity and Inclusivity in German Studies

Open Online Conference, University of Aberdeen

June 24- 26, 2021

The official theme for the 2021 WIGS Conference is “Crossing Thresholds”. As a part of this conference, a special call for papers is being issued for a panel of papers that will specifically explore the issues of diversity and inclusivity as they relate to German Studies. Papers accepted for presentation should be ca. 20 minutes in length and may be pre-recorded. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to, the following: 1.) Institutional thresholds that narrow the breadth of research conducted within German Studies; 2.) Career thresholds that block the hiring and advancement of minorities (e.g. ethnoracial, gender identity, sexual orientation, differently abled, religious, etc.) in German Studies; 3.) Canon thresholds that limit the breadth of German Studies curricula; and 4.) Publishing thresholds that privilege publications in conservative journals that traditionally reject innovative work outside of the norms of the traditional German Studies canon.

All papers which critically examine the issues of diversity and inclusion in theory and/or practice are welcome. However, priority will be given to submissions that focus on the specific challenges faced in Higher Education by individuals and institutions when implementing diversity and inclusion frameworks. Importantly, proposals should not only focus upon identifying problem areas, but also on offering concrete solutions for promoting inclusivity and diversity within German Studies, academia, and the society as a whole. Proposals may be in either German or English. Contributions from persons not affiliated with an academic institution such as independent researchers, authors, publishers, community leaders, and artists are very much welcome.

PROPOSAL GUIDELINES
1.) Abstract proposals (max. 300 words, excluding the title and references) should be sent as a PDF email attachment to Professor I. M. Nick ([log in to unmask]);
2.) For organizational purposes, the proposals must include “WIGS2021” in the subject line of the email;
3.) All proposals must include an abstract, title, and a preliminary list of references;
4.) The full name of all authors, preferred gender pronouns, and affiliations (if any) must appear in the body of the email and NOT in the abstract itself;
5.) In the case of multi-authored submissions, one person must be clearly designated as the primary contact;

 The DEADLINE for abstract submission is April 11, 2021. However, submissions received by April 15, 2021 will still be considered for possible inclusion, space permitting. Authors will be notified about acceptance on or by April 30, 2021. Please address questions to Professor Nick ([log in to unmask]). We look forward to receiving your submission.
