‘Diagrams’
11am (BST) 19th May 2021
This event invites Dr Joe Graham and Dr David Griffin to present on the role of diagrams and notation in an exploration of temporalities of drawing. This event will be chaired by James Bowen, a practice-led PhD student at Loughborough University who is investigating the research question ‘How can voice be explored as a tool for drawing?’ with particular emphasis on the role of surface, trace, and technology in the production of voice.
Dr Joe Graham is currently Assistant Professor of Visual Communication Design at Kadir Has University, Istanbul and completed his practice-led PhD in Drawing Research at Loughborough University. Dr Graham will be presenting his paper investigating the research question ‘How can a series of diagrammatic drawings be used to explore the ontological understanding of drawing?’. Through the use of what he names the ‘Drawing Fourfold’, a diagram that depicts four interrelating elements of drawing, Graham will explore an understanding of drawing that is both simultaneous and progressive.
Dr David Griffin is currently Assistant Professor at OCAD University in Toronto and holds a PhD from the Glasgow School of Art. Dr. Griffin will be presenting his paper on how the seemingly simple Euclidean geometry of a music notation gives rise to the complexity of performance. Through an analysis of different drawing systems against a background of musical composition and production, time will be discussed as not just the commons in which we all circulate but as in a music notation, time is a character in the scheme.
