We present new analysis from the Third Sector Research Centre and the University of Stirling about the exposure of charities in England, Wales and Scotland to different sorts of income streams. This is the largest and most robust analysis of its kind to date. Unlike survey-based research based on perceptions, it uses reported financial data. We use data from administrative returns for charities which give a breakdown into the main income streams reported to regulators (e.g. donation and legacies; income from charitable activities; trading income).

We find that more than half of charities have what we would characterise as highly concentrated revenue profiles. This means their exposure to the suspension or collapse of particular streams can potentially be a source of significant risk. We also demonstrate that there are important variations in the composition of charity incomes by size and age of the organisation, and field of charitable activity. The primary sources of data we deploy relate to administrative returns from larger charities but we also use samples of data from charity accounts for smaller and medium-sized entities. The analyses are highly relevant to consideration of the vulnerability of organisations to the withdrawal or shrinkage of particular income streams.

Presenters: Diarmuid McDonnell, John Mohan (TSRC) and Alan Duggan (Stirling) with responses from Anoushka Kenley (Pro Bono Economics) and Roberta Fusco (Charity Finance Group, tbc)

Chair: Sarah Vibert, NCVO
