Further Call For Papers: Arts University Bournemouth Online Symposium: Costume, Scenography and Critical Theory, May 27/28, 2021.
The BA Costume with Performance Design course at Arts University Bournemouth would like to invite academics and PHD candidates to submit proposals for one-hour lecture presentations linking Costume, Scenography and Critical Theory.
Each year we welcome a range of academic and professional speakers with backgrounds in theatre, performance and film who are interested in presenting to our second-year BA students at a two-day Symposium. This year’s event will take place online on May 27/28, 2021.
The Symposium seeks to offer students a range of practical, historical, political and theoretical perspectives with regard to their Costume and Scenography practice and to inspire and to prepare them for their research-based dissertation writing.
Proposals are sought for presentations that make strong, practice-led links between critical theory approaches and Performance Design, Scenography, Costume Design and Costume Interpretation, with a particular focus on issues of:
• Gender and Sexual Identity, (we are particularly keen to develop our students’ understanding of the relationship between dress and Transgender identities).
• Race, Ethnicity and Interculturalism, (we are particularly keen to develop relationships with costume and performance designers and makers from Global Majority backgrounds who can contribute to our efforts to de-colonialise our curriculum).
• Spaces of Performance: Site Specifics, Indoor and Outdoor performance (particularly with reference to performance design in relation to the ‘Outdoor Turn’ in performance that is being prompted by Covid 19).
• Ideology and the Politics of Performance: (Costuming Resistance, Protest and Political Identity).
• The Performing Body: (we are particularly interested in contributions focusing on ‘Antagonistic’ costume, costume and design for Dance and Circus, costume that challenges ableism with regard to performing bodies and presentations that consider the relationship between dress and (sub)cultural identity.)
• Ritual, Carnival, Festival and Play. (Immersive Festival design, processional crafts and large scale puppetry
We have a budget available for speakers.
Deadline: April 19, 2021.
