With apologies for cross-posting.
The Local and Community Media Network of Meccsa is pleased to announce the launch of a Spring series of virtual research seminars with the first event on March 23.
Exploring Collaboration in the future of local media. Tuesday, March 23, 2021. 4pm-5.30pm.
Featuring Dr Carol Arnold, Canterbury Christ Church University, and Megan Lucero, Bureau Local.
This online event will create a space to discuss the place of collaboration in the current landscape of local and community media. The talk will consist of two short presentations/provocations followed by time for discussion.
Carol Arnold will draw on her study of hyperlocal practitioners to discuss the ways in which independent franchise groups represent an emerging business model. They benefit individual operators by allowing them to work in collaborative ways, by supporting each other and through sharing of skillsets. Operators speak of this mutual-support being crucial in the early stage of their hyperlocal provisions. The collective aspect provided by independent franchise operations also allows them to access economies of scale.
Megan Lucero will talk about the recent work of Bureau Local, of which she is Director. Megan built the Bureau Local’s collaborative, bottom-up investigations team and has overseen all of its collaborative investigations since 2017. This has resulted in over 500 local, investigative stories and was done in partnership with 1,500 collaborators across the UK. Megan is currently developing a shared sustainability model for public interest journalism with Bureau Local partners. Megan is a big fan of community-owned news outlets such as the Bristol Cable and the Ferret and is a member of her local paper, Waltham Forest Echo.
