Call for papers now OPEN!
The theme of the 2021 annual CILIP LIHG conference is ‘Power and Resistance in Library History’. As ever, our aim is to attract a broad spectrum of papers from across the global history of libraries. Papers from postgraduates and early career researchers are especially encouraged.
How have libraries, through the annals of history, been founded upon and impacted by hierarchies of power in national and global history? This theme is intended to provoke sustained reflection on hegemonic structures within libraries amongst patrons, professionals, and their communities. As well as examining the underlying restrictions imposed by power struggles, we are also interested in how historical players demonstrated agency through resistance.
Proposals for twenty-minute papers are welcome on any aspects which demonstrate power and resistance within the history of libraries. These might address, but are not limited to, any of the following topics:
The contributions from imperial exploits to growing library collections
Colonialism and library experience
Racial discrimination in library provision and practices
Social class and access to library resources
Class and the formation of libraries
Gendered expectations of library customers
Diversity (gender, class, and racial) of librarians and information professionals
Agency of library stakeholders – patrons and professionals who challenge boundaries
To submit a proposal, please email the following to Angela Platt: [log in to unmask]
Submissions will be accepted until 23 April 2021.
Please send in the email:
Your name and academic or professional affiliation (independent researchers welcome).
Email contact details.
200 word abstract of your proposals which, minimally, includes the paper’s argument and how it fits in with this conference theme.
Very best wishes,
CILIP LIHG
