Over the past year, we have altered our support offering to students moving from a 1-1 appointment based system to small group clinics. Each Academic Librarian runs a weekly hourly clinic for students in their college (up to 5 students can register). Having attended a session, if we feel an individual requires additional support, we can offer a 1-1 appointment at our own discretion.
One thing which has become apparent is that students were registering for clinics requiring support with general queries which could be answered from either looking at their LibGuide, watching an instructional video or attending one of our workshops. To counteract this, we have amended the registration form and students have to say whether they have engaged with any of our resources/sessions and, if so, which ones. If they answer no, they are encouraged to look at our other support. We are trialling this amended form with two areas (Human Sciences and Nursing) and if it makes a difference we will roll it out to the other colleges.
What we are aiming to do next is look at some tools or mechanisms for students to engage with following a clinic to help them practice or reflect on what they have learned during the session. Does anyone do anything like this and would be willing to share examples? Similarly, if you ask students to undertake any pre-appointment activities we would be interested in examples.
