Social innovation in sustainability in higher education still has a long runway, in relation to the people, products and business models and how universities should value add to society. Turbulent social and economic development, as well as government and market failures, call for more insightful innovation in education, product, and service development, and business models. Specific to higher education, where does social innovation sit in the balance between efficiency and accountability: should universities be more socially accountable to serve a larger purpose? How can universities develop more effective tools to measure social innovation performance and impact? What are the dynamics that lift the success of social innovation? How can university administrators manage the social innovation process more effectively and strategically? How can the leaders, managers, and change agents keep social innovation sustainable and cultivate a persistent spirit of lasting social change?

These issues require further discussion, both theoretically and practically. This special issue, therefore, encourages submissions that address the above research and practice directions. The suggested topics for this special issue may include but are not limited to the following:

Suggested topics
Social innovation opportunity identification and assessment
Dynamics of social innovation networks
