The open‐air precinct dedicated to Ba‘al Hammon and his consort Tinnit in Carthage serves as one of the best studied yet least understood components of Phoenician‐Punic society. The overwhelming majority of the epigraphic corpus, the iconographic repertoire, and the typologies of urns and amulets, all derive from this singular sanctuary. However, ancient texts alleging ritual infanticide there are tendentious and written by outsiders, its inscriptions enigmatic and brief, so interpretation of archaeological material remains offer our best hope for clarifying ongoing debates and for developing independent new hypotheses. Please join us for a conversation about the challenges facing current excavations of the National Heritage Institute of Tunisia.
