DRN Temporal Drawing Events
Organised by the Drawing Research Group, Loughborough University
Continuing with the annual Drawing Research Network events, the Drawing Research Group at Loughborough University are pleased to announce the upcoming second event of ‘Temporal Drawing’ online events ‘Stillness & Motion’. The series of free events aim to explore the notion of temporal drawing, by which we suggest that temporality is not only inherent in drawing, both as process and as a product, but also as its fundamental condition. Speakers for each of the events have been selected to offer differing perspectives of themes emerging in response to the call for papers around the notion of temporal drawing. We would like to invite delegates to the second event in the series:
‘Stillness and Motion’
11am (GMT) 24th March 2021
Sharing interests in temporality, motion, and the materiality of drawing, artists Jo Lewis and Emily Carrington Freeman present papers that explore in different ways, the dynamic tension between transitory movement and physical mark. With specific reference to drawn and photographic work by Picasso, Emily Carrington Freeman will demonstrate the ambiguous relationship between moving, temporal gesture, and static trace. Jo Lewis, reflecting on her own practice of working with water and ink, will interrogate the existence of stillness in relation to the movement inherent in drawing’s making.
Emily Carrington Freeman is an artist based in Oxford, where she completed her undergraduate and master’s studies in Fine Art (BFA) and the History of Art and Visual Culture (MSt). London based artist Jo Lewis teaches drawing at the National Gallery (since 2002) and has been a visiting lecturer at London Film School for the last ten years. https://jolewisart.com. The event will be chaired by Serena Smith, practice-led doctoral researcher at Loughborough University.
