Applications are invited for a number of PhD funding opportunities based in the Department of Statistical Science (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/statistics/), UCL.
The Department is among the three largest Statistics groups in the UK with more than 30 academic members of staff. Research in the Department is organised into six themes (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/statistics/research): biostatistics; computational statistics; economics, finance and business; general theory and methodology; multivariate and high dimensional data; stochastic modelling of complex systems. Research often cuts across these areas. Much of this work is interdisciplinary and involves collaborations within and outside UCL.
Studentships with starting date up to the end of August 2021
Three EPSRC (https://epsrc.ukri.org/skills/students/)-funded studentships. These can involve any topic within the Statistical Science remit, although applications to the following topics are particularly welcomed:
• Topics within the Statistical Science remit that are relevant to the interests if the UK Atomic Energy Authority
(https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/uk-atomic-energy-authority) (project to be supervised by Professor Serge Guillas
(https://www.ucl.ac.uk/statistics/people/sergeguillas)).
• Topics within the Statistical Science remit that are relevant to the interests of the Met Office Academic Partnership
(https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/approach/collaboration/partnership).
• Topics in the area of Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence (https://ucl-ellis.github.io/).
These studentships will be 4 years in duration (or 6 years for part-time candidates) and cover tuition fees at the UK rate, an annual maintenance stipend (£17,285 in 2020/21, rising with inflation each year) and a small allowance for consumables. To be eligible for a full award, applicants must normally have no restrictions on how long they can stay in the UK and must have been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the studentship. Applications from exceptional candidates who do not meet these criteria will also be considered (as EPSRC allows universities to offer a limited number of studentships with open eligibility).
Studentships with starting date between September 2021 and August 2022
Several (i) EPSRC studentships, and (ii) Departmentally-funded Teaching Assistantships. These can involve any topic within the Statistical Science remit.
The EPSRC studentships will be 4 years in duration (or 6 years for part-time candidates) and cover tuition fees at the UK rate, an annual maintenance stipend (as per the indicative value given above) and a small allowance for consumables. These studentships are open to both home and international candidates, but the total number of international awards is capped.
The Teaching Assistantships will be 3.5 years in duration (or 6 years for part-time students) and cover tuition fees up to the Overseas rate, an annual maintenance stipend (indicative value above) and a small allowance for consumables. Full-time students will spend 6 months of their time teaching (spread across the 3.5 years) and devote the remainder to undertaking their research. These studentships are open to both UK and Overseas candidates.
Person Specification
The requirement for admission to the MPhil/PhD in Statistical Science is a 1st class or high upper 2nd class Bachelor’s degree, or a Master’s degree with merit or distinction, in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline. International qualifications of an equivalent standard are also acceptable. Further details can be found on the Departmental website (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/statistics/prospective-postgraduates/phd).
The requirements for appointment as a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant – relevant in particular for the Teaching Assistantships – are detailed in the PGTA person specification (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/statistics/sites/statistics/files/pgta_person_specification.pdf).
