Hello -
I am a records manager working in an academic environment. I have been asked to work with our IT department to migrate our working documents and records from file shares to Microsoft365. As I expected, the methods to do this using, for instance, PowerShell and the SharePoint migration tool are compromising the metadata to an extent that makes me consider that we would be failing to maintain the continuity of the records if we proceeded with it as well as creating a usability nightmare for any staff member wanting to retrieve information from these documents.
I was involved in a similar migration for a previous employer and we used a well-known third-party software solution (ShareGate) to manage this process, and it worked very well. However, it costs a substantial sum and our IT manager is very reluctant to use it as it is not a Microsoft-approved solution.
I am certain I am not the only person to encounter this problem and I am hoping to update my understanding by posting on the list. What I can find online suggests that there is still no solution to this problem available via Microsoft and that ShareGate is probably still the most effective product to tackle it. Is there anything I am missing? And is my concern about the integrity of the records misplaced? (I don't think it is and this is a point I am having to defend quite forcefully at the moment).
Thanks for any assistance you can offer
Lisa Hutchins
