Hi Everyone,
So many interesting threads but so little time to respond, I do support Graham Snow's response.
M365
If you are an organisation who has already invested in Microsoft365 and at least have an E3 license, you would have the capability to use it as a platform to build all these information management applications , to fit your people and how they work, to fit your specific processes and how it flows end to end, and to fit in with your organisation specific function.
Using M365 you are no longer just limited to SharePoint as Graham explained in his reply, there are a number of out of the box applications that you can use to create, automate and continuously improve.
On the financial justification building these applications on M365 supports the full utilisation of your investment.
Now realistically as an organisation you might not have the resources nor the budget to invest in the development of these IM applications. However don't forget that we have a community of service providers and consultants (including me and the company I work) who you can reach out to and have a conversation with on available options.
OTHER USE CASES
Now not everyone in our community have invested in the M365 platform thus purchasing what we call Commercial of the Shelf (COTS) applications may be your only option my advise is that of utmost important is listing your critical requirements for each application.
Then you can research recommended and endorsed applications against your requirements, once you get a short list check reviews from Gartner, Forrester etc... before requesting for a demo from each company.
This is a process I follow before I recommend applications to ensure that its fit for purpose, technically robust, manageable and financially sound.
I hope above helps
