We are helping a lot of clients through this process. Unfortunately, you have to assess each video individually unless they all follow the same format. There are certainly times when you have to make a subjective decision whether some visual content needs to be audio described, but my view is that it is very clear in this case. Your proposed solution is fine - there is no need to audio describe all the visuals.

However, given that the text in the video is so funky, I would recommend providing captions or a transcript even though they are not a WCAG requirement in this case.

Subject: Audio description for videos - do we need to describe all visual elements?

Hi everybody,

I'm new to the network and hoping somebody can offer some advice regarding video accessibility.

Our college is currently being audited by the Government Digital Service and while we're confident with the accessibility of our webpages accessible, we're struggling with our video content, especially regarding audio descriptions.

For the promo video below (link below), we have created a voiceover that will read out the slogans that show up as text throughout. My question is: do we also need to provide an audio description of the visuals (short snippets of footage) that move across the screen during the video?

https://vimeo.com/428072027

My worry is that if we were to audio-describe all of those elements, the audio description would be about ten times longer than the video itself and would be rushed at best, providing a sub-par user experience anyway.

I realise this is a very specific question, but if anybody has any experience in this area I would be very grateful for your thoughts.

Many thanks,

Greg
