Last Sunday (10/1/21), our ICC ZOOM public meeting was filled with delight
and excitement. The topic was “*Films on Indo-Caribbean identity, culture
and heritage*” which featured the live appearances of filmmakers DR. PERRY
POLAR (Trinidad), IVAN TAI-APIN (Suriname) and MAHADEO SHIVRAJ (Guyana) who
spoke and screened excerpts of their productions.
As always, we had an international audience with new participants joining
from all parts of the world. Among the luminaries in the virtual audience
were Leon Brunnings, Stephen Huggins, Jim Armstrong, Jai Sears, Gabriel
Pate, Cedric Mc Donald, Dr Seeta Shah Roath, Professor Emeritus Brinsley
Samaroo, Merselino Liguori, Dr Tara Singh, Professor Rosanne Kanhai, Janet
Baneo, Professor Patricia Mohammed, Brian Rampaul, Dr Devanand Bhagwan,
Heidi McKenzie, Professor David Dabydeen, Anil Hardit Singh and Professor
Keshav Patel.
The highlight of the night was the screening of the trailer “Wiren”
directed and co-produced by part-Hindustani, IVAN TAI-APIN. The film was
featured on *Netflix* and is now in the race for an Oscar Academy Award.
The main character is Wiren Jagessar who portrays the real-life story of
the deaf-mute Wiren Meghoe of Suriname. Wiren’s mother is played by Kavita
Ramphal.

*Do not buy or advertise in the anti-Indian Trinidad EXPRESS newspaper.* It
promotes mainly racially-biased columnists such as Professors Selwyn Cudjoe
and Theodore
Lewis.
Lewis states that too many Indian children are attending Muslim, Hindu and
Presbyterian high schools as well as the Catholic-administered St Mary's,
Fatima and St Joseph's Convent in San Fernando. He falsely claims: “African
children are crowded out of the top schools. This has gone as far as it
should.” Lewis is among a group of 23 exclusively Afro-Trinidadian advisers
lobbying the PNM government to abolish the SEA primary school exam and the
CONCORDAT agreement to surreptitiously stop Indian children from continuing
to excel in
education.
