INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
RE-VISIONING PERIPHERAL GEOGRAPHIES IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH
FEB-APRIL 2021
A series of five online workshops has been organised under the auspices of the Royal Academy of Engineering-funded project PIVOT- Re-visioning Peripheral Geographies: Strategies for Resilient Urban Development in the Global South project. Led by Dr.Lakshmi Priya Rajendran from Anglia Ruskin University, the interdisciplinary multilateral collaborative project involves partners from UK (University of Nottingham, University of Reading, Cardiff University), India (IIT Roorkee, Hindustan Institute of Sciences and Technology), Mexico (UNAM), Turkey (Istanbul Technical University), South Africa (University of Cape Town) and Nigeria (University of Nigeria)
We invite papers from early career scholars and practitioners across the globe working on/in/ empirical, methodological or theoretical work that helps expand the boundaries of peri-urban studies in Global South particularly India, Mexico, Turkey, Nigeria and South Africa. The aim of these workshops is to engage in critical dialogue with each other’s work on peri-urban research and discuss current challenges including inclusive planning, health, social justice and environmental inequality and the potential for resilient development in project focus countries from the Global South.
We invite submissions from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, as well as those adopting inter- and trans-disciplinary perspectives . As the main goal of the workshop series is to offer a space for discussion and improvement of ongoing research, we will privilege papers considering theoretical questions and development, preliminary analyses of empirical findings and reflections on epistemological/methodological dimensions – or a mix of two or more of these approaches.
Some of the themes include but not limited to:
- Peri-urban dynamics
- Peri-urban and integrated city development
- Everyday socio-spatial narratives of peri-urban geographies
- Peri-urban governance and challenges
- Quality of life in the peri-urban
- Marginalisation and right to city
- Environmental, economic and health (in)equalities
- Hard and soft infrastructures
Each workshop will be composed of:
Part One: Keynote followed by an interactive session, participant’s presentations and Q&A
Part Two: Breakout parallel group activity sessions where participants will identify and discuss synergies between their work, and develop a collaborative think-piece, which will be published on the project website the week after the workshop.
Who can attend the workshop
The workshop is open to early-career scholars, planners, practitioners, in the fields of urban studies, planning and geography, engineering and built environment, and all the social sciences and humanities with a keen interest in peri-urban research and development. To have a focused and meaningful discussion, places for each workshop is limited to 8 and participants selected through a competitive application process.
Benefits of workshop participation include:
- All participants will receive a certificate of participation.
