Universal children’s benefits: lessons from Canada and Ireland
Webinar on Tuesday 8 December 2020, 3.00pm - 4.00pm
Join us to discuss universal children’s benefits, and what the UK can learn from policy approaches adopted in other countries. You will hear from international experts with experience of researching and evaluating universal children’s benefits in Canada and Ireland.
You'll hear from:
• Mark Stabile (Stone Chaired Professor of Wealth Inequality and Professor of Economics at INSEAD) – reinvesting in universal children’s benefits: the Canada Child Benefit. In 2016, Canada revamped child benefit, significantly boosting the adequacy of payments to families, with significant effects on child poverty. Mark will discuss the impact of the policy, as well as the process of establishing political support for increased investment in children’s benefits.
• Megan Curran (Columbia University) and Tony Fahey (University College Dublin) – on maintaining the case for universal children’s benefits: child benefit in Ireland. Ireland has a long history of paying child benefit on a universal basis. Our speakers will discuss the origins and impact of the policy, and offer some reflections on maintaining political support for universal children’s benefits over time.
The webinar will be chaired by Fran Bennett, Senior Research Fellow, Department of Social Policy and Intervention, Oxford University.
Presentations will be kept short to allow time for your questions and discussion.
