Hello
This may be of interest to archivists whose collections include sport related objects; photographs, programmes, films, trophies, etc
We recently organised a very successful webinar on the 13th November, Sporting Memories Café - Sharing Stories and Supporting Communities which was part of the 2020 Being Human Festival, UK's only national festival of the humanities. We heard from community groups in Scotland using sporting archives and other resources to help people living with dementia, as well as supporting people encountering isolation, depression, loneliness, and other mental health issues
Hugh Dan MacLennan Scottish broadcaster, author and sporting academic, Michael White who developed the Football Reminiscence Project with the Scottish Football Museum & Alzheimer Scotland also gave presentations and we found out about the research behind archives helping people with dementia from Professor Richard Haynes, University of Stirling and why they are funded by charities such as, Life Changes Trust.
If, you missed it I can send you a recording of the webinar
The newspaper article attached to this message, summarizes very well the importance of sporting archives helping those with dementia. It is an interview with Michael White with a focus on football archives - Sunday Times, 6 December 2020 - Sport Section
If, you would like to learn more or become involved in a working group exploring the benefits of sporting archives while supporting community archives and groups caring for their collections, please get in touch with me: [log in to unmask]
