Dear colleagues,
As you will know, schools in the UK have had to rely on online teaching
for much of this school year and it looks like this is not going to stop
for yet a few more months. Additionally, we are aware from liaising with
schools in the UK that there is a strong appetite for resources designed
by academics in higher education to complement those used in secondary
schools. For this reason, we would like to create a platform that will
provide *videos in German targeting set A-level texts*, answering a
crucial need in these difficult times. These short videos will be useful
for teaching in 2021 but also for independent revision in time for
A-level (or equivalent) examinations. The material will be useful for
students studying remotely and independently, as well as part of a
classroom-based activity. We are aiming to have 8-10 videos ready to be
watched and/or downloaded by the end of February 2021.
Although the University of Cambridge will contribute to this resource by
covering any administration costs and by providing and maintaining the
platform, this is not intended as a Cambridge-centred venture. Rather,
the project should be envisaged as part of every university’s collective
contribution to Widening Participation and support for schools during
COVID-19. The platform will be called CCARL: Cambridge Collaborative
A-level Resources for Languages (these terms will make the platform
easily google-able).
*How can you help? Please have a look at the list of set texts below.
Would you be able to produce a short video (20 minutes) in German which
could be used by teachers as a supplementary teaching tool or by
students to revise for this text? If yes, please get back to me at
[log in to unmask] with an expression of interest by Friday, 21st of
December. We can then provide you with more detailed information
including advice on the format, inclusivity and copyright. Our aim is to
include as many national and international institutions in the
production of these resources as possible. Your name and that of your
institution will be visibly credited. Although we will not be able to
pay for these videos, we would like to include colleagues who are not on
permanent contracts and would find it difficult to afford the extra time
necessary for this project. If you would like to be part of this project
and are in this category, please also get back to us.
*How can we help? The Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and
Linguistics at Cambridge University will co-ordinate the project. We
will provide the administration and online platform. Although very
limited, we also have funds to support colleagues who are not on
permanent contracts. In the first round of videos, we would like to
target texts that have been nominated by a network of A-level teachers.
We may wish to extend the scope in a second round.
*Who are the videos for? All videos will be free to access by anybody.
We will promote these resources via all of the usual channels and will
encourage you to do the same.
*Are similar resources available for other languages? We are also
contacting colleagues in French departments. For Spanish, a bank of
resources exists already and we decided not to duplicate.
