Project title: Understanding the rules of self-reference in bolstering age-related memory
This project will address brain functions in later life. It builds on our recent development of a new paradigm for measuring cognitive biases (based on the self, reward, and emotion) and a theory of the integrative self in behavioural neuroscience and experimental psychology, but making progress towards a neurobiological understanding of the nature of self-representation in healthy ageing – what any such representation ‘does’ for us as we age?
The PhD project would suit a graduate who has experience in at least one of these disciplines – behavioural neuroscience, bioinformatics/computer science, or psychology, and would receive extensive training on the others, promoting the opportunity to learn and apply quantitative approaches to biological problems. The student will join a well-funded group: Prof Sui (cognitive neuroscience, neuropsychology) and Dr. Yi (AI-based applications). The student will be supported throughout the PhD by the excellent collaborative team of researchers in the schools of Psychology and Natural & Computing Sciences at the University of Aberdeen.
