I am writing to advise you of the sad death of Professor Jim Gallacher who was central to the lifelong learning, widening access and articulation agenda over many years and decades. He was a wonderful man and eminent in his field.

Professor Mike Osborne, Director of CR&DALL(Centre for Research & Development in Adult and Lifelong Learning) has written an account of Jim's life which I have uploaded the Fair Access website under Connect/news

I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to Jim's family and colleagues who worked with him. I met him on a number of occasions and he was a lovely, unassuming gentleman with a genuine belief in widening access whose knowledge and expertise was harnessed by many.
