Hi,

I'd agree with Daureen here. While I advise that open access is the preferred option, there are often very good reasons why data can't be made freely available. Any reputable/established journal publisher will know this.

We assign DOIs to all deposited datasets, but if there's an embargo on the set, clicking on the DOI link will lead to an explanation and an offer to request access. However I tell my researchers that what they're doing is supplying evidence that the research data exists, even if it can't be immediately accessed.

Thanks,

Hi,

What the researcher did is basically what I'm teaching (was) in my workshop tomorrow. Good to know publishers can have their own opinions. It is why I tell folks to look at author information while conducting the literature search so they are prepared.

Does the data from open repositories have DOIs? If yes the researcher can provide these DOIs alongside her explanation.

About the data in a closed repository - maybe go back and talk to them. There may be a legitimate reason why it is closed.

Subject: Journal data sharing policy question

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone on the list may be able to advise?

One of our researchers submitting a paper to the Journal of Ecology (BES, via Wiley) has been told, “our journal requires that all data used in a study must be freely and immediately available to our readers and archived in an appropriate repository (preferably with a DOI)."

The issue she has is that much of the data has been derived from different public databases and in requesting that the data underpinning the study are stored in one place, they would be re-depositing data stored in other repositories. Her paper already has a data access statement explaining where the data was obtained and I have suggested that she confirm with the editor/journal that this policy definitely applies to the particular circumstances of this paper. If they are adamant though, one option I have considered is that we create a record in our repository with links to all the external datasets - this would then generate the single DOI for the 'datasets' of the paper. Is this recommended practice?

An added complication is that there is the odd data set she has re-used under permission and isn't available publicly to others - statements in her paper make this clear though and also how others could identify the owner to seek permissions.

Do you think the journal has applied a blanket policy that doesn't apply here or is there a way to comply with this requirement?

Many thanks!!

Kate
