We have glucose and ketones on some of our meters. We have only had one sample problem initially when a nurse ran what she thought was a ketone but was actually a glucose.
The ketones are only on a set numbers of meters, not on them all, within the hospitals. The strips are not kept in the meter workstation they are kept separately so they have to physically get the strips to run the ketones on a meter. They only run the qc( every 24hrs)when they have a patient that need ketones done.
We hold the ketone strips stock and issue them out to the wards so we can monitor usage.
Kind Regards
Sheila

We used to have a joint glucose/ketone meter and did have some occurrences of staff using ketone strips for a glucose test and not noticing - even though they were packaged differently.
We now have separate meters.
