I carried out an audit surrounding emergency barcode usage with blood glucose meters at Basildon Hospital last year and this showed a large number of inappropriate uses of the emergency barcode. This was shared with the Maintaining High Standards team at the hospital who were keen to work with us to reduce the numbers of inappropriate uses.
The way we have dealt with it is by removing the emergency barcode from the BM boxes and instead placed it on a laminated notice within the resus trollies in all areas.
I re-audited recently and the number of inappropriate uses was significantly reduced. A&E appeared to be the main area where use was still occurring but as we could look into those staff who used the barcode, this was passed on to the ED manager for resolution.
We also restricted manual entry of patient ID on the meters so staff could not enter random patient ID.
So far it seems to be working.
