The air we breathe: practices of care 10 November 2020, 14:30 - 15:30
Focusing on practices of care, this conversational event brings together four disciplines in the context of environmental issues and air quality. Curator Marina Velez, environmental scientist Douglas Crawford-Brown, mathematician Paul Linden and artist Sarah Strachan will discuss Sarah’s work 'The Air We Breathe’. Involving families around the world, this collaborative art work reflects on personal experience of air quality and intergenerational environmental justice, touching upon the idea that our childhood experiences of the environment are hard wired into our ecological thinking and establishes awareness for the rest of our life.
The conversation explores artistic and scientific ways of addressing the same subject and investigate commonalities in art and science practices of care. Event presented as part of Cambridge Zero Climate Change Festival.

The rural imagination - other knowledges as resistance to monocultures of the mind
10 November 2020, 19:00 - 20:00
There is a direct relationship, says scholar and activist Winona LaDuke, between the loss of biodiversity and the loss of cultural diversity. Losing the ability to connect to and understand the land are in themselves acts of desertification. Based on the idea that valuing other forms of knowledge needs to happen in order to develop new empathies and new sensitivities in relation to humans’ relationship with nature, this talk focuses on Belalcázar, Spain, where Marina Velez Vago has been working during the past seven years. Marina presents the idea that new values and re-valuing can emerge from working-with local farmers and shepherds and looks at these through the lens of the works produced as well as through conversations, pastoral walks and interventions.

Are herbal medicines and products safe for consumption?
11 November 2020, 19:00 - 20:00
The use and popularity of herbal products including herbal medicines and dietary supplements continue to increase globally. At one end, the use of herbal medicines is linked to the availability and affordability while at the other end, individuals may feel pressured to look certain ways which has provided the industry with a large elevation particularly in dietary supplements to reduce weight. However, public health and safety concerns also continue to grow. Several studies have highlighted the potential toxic effects of these products. In this presentation Lata Gautam, Anglia Ruskin University, and her research team covers findings from a recent survey on public knowledge and perception about herbal medicines, herbal products and dietary supplements effectiveness and safety. They also reveal findings from a lab-based study on detection of toxic metals in herbal medicines and a hospital based study conducted to investigate the contribution of herbal medicine related casualty and fatality figures. With an interdisciplinary mixed method approach drawn from public health and forensic chemistry, the study provides some unique insights to improve public health policies and awareness with positive health outcomes.
