Conceptual anthropology is the discipline that analyzes the causes and
motives of human behavior through social, ritual, intellectual
expressions, beliefs or artistic creativity; it associates various
sectors of the human and social sciences to consider the meaning of
behavior, habits and other cultural indicators. Every current and
every social expression has its own meaning and allows us to
understand its trends and potential prospects. Conceptual anthropology
is a new field of research, which took shape during a congress of the
International Union of Prehistoric Sciences in Florianopolis, Brazil,
in 2011. The Atelier research center, based in Valcamonica, Italy, is
the world center of this new discipline. Recent developments have led
to the creation of an editorial sector dedicated to conceptual
anthropology that in six years has produced over 50 volumes and the
quarterly magazine EXPRESSION in English, which reaches researchers
and institutions in 80 countries. The more than 200 authors come from
42 countries of 5 continents. Prehistoric and tribal societies, arts
and beliefs, are the main focus.
The objective of this new discipline is a vast understanding of human
behavior and cultural trends, recurring and isolated phenomena,
predictable and unpredictable evolutions and changes, not only in
economics and technology, but also in social, ethical, aesthetic and
spiritual trends, based on the association of knowledge from various
disciplines, from psychology to history, from archeology to sociology.
It is a permanent journey of research and discovery for an
understanding of human thought and behavior. The power of the mind
lies in the ability to understand, which expands by combining the
knowledge of different disciplines.
Each discipline has its memory as a basis for the research and
progress of the discipline itself. The combination of disciplines is
also a union of knowledge and concepts for a broader base of research
and culture. Every social, economic or political operator would
increase his/her efficiency by deepening the knowledge of conceptual
anthropology.
Today the media accumulate technical and historical memory. But the
insights and associations of the human mind are still irreplaceable.
Our being and our actions are rooted in memory. Human behavior is
based on memory. When mistakes are made, they often derive from memory
fogging. On the other hand, the positive results come from its good
use. It is not about electronic memory, but about the type of memory
that turns into intuition and rediscovery, the memory coming from the
deep well of human minds.
Faced with the fashion of extreme specialization, which risks reducing
scholars to technicians and operators to robots, conceptual
anthropology goes against the current. Without doubt the technicians
are necessary, but the conceptual anthropology proposes a new, albeit
ancient, trend of research, based on the panoramic wisdom of human and
social tendencies deepened by the wide range of the humanities and
social sciences. Let the technicians and conceptual anthropologists be
aware of their different roles, let them do their job and then enrich
each other through the results of their commitment.
Research has a real social function when it produces culture. When
culture is creative and innovative, it promotes the growth of the
intellect and stimulates new directions of thought. Conceptual
anthropology opens the mind to new perspectives of social and
conceptual analysis, it is a source of provocative and stimulating
awareness, a healthy and beneficial enrichment of the intellect
for young people of all ages. Our world today, searching for its own
tomorrow, has a profound need for this kind of culture. Atelier
publications present studies and research on conceptual anthropology.
They help to learn without teaching.

hoping that it helps to discover, and also contribute to spreading,
this new discipline.
