You are warmly invited to the SIG Developing, Teaching and Testing Academic Listeners first online praxis workshop. This will take place on Friday 20th November from 4-5pm (UK time). Please register via the link at the end of this message. Moving forward, we will organise both standard webinars and online praxis workshops as part of the special interest group activities. This first praxis workshop will be different to previous webinars:

- Each praxis workshop will have a different theme related to academic listening.
- We will let you know the theme of the workshop a few weeks beforehand and provide one or two pieces of suggested reading on the theme. All texts are intended as a springboard for discussion. However, you do not need to have read the texts ahead of the praxis workshops to participate.
- The workshops will begin with a (very) short summary of key points from the suggested text(s).
- This will be followed by small group discussions on the themes/issues raised in the text(s) and time to share and discuss your own practice in EAP in relation to these.
- We will then have time for whole group feedback and discussion.

The theme for this first online praxis workshop is ‘using authentic listening materials in EAP listening lessons’ and the suggested texts are the following:

Flowerdew & Miller. 1997. The teaching of academic listening comprehension and the question of authenticity. English for Specific Purposes, 16(1), pp. 27-46

Deroey, K. 2018. The representativeness of lecture listening coursebooks: Language, lecture authenticity, research-informedness. Journal of English for Academic Purposes. 34, pp. 57-67

We know that some people will have library access because of their working context. However, if you do not and have issues accessing the suggested articles, please contact us at [log in to unmask]

To register for this first online praxis workshop, please complete the registration form via this link:

We will be asking you to share your ideas on themes for subsequent online praxis workshops in due course 😊

Thank you
The Organising Committee
