I read Wendy's email about gender and the responses with interest. This is another issue that we will need to think about for our project. I do believe that the power of names is in working at scale, to bring archives and other resources together. But in this challenge there are a whole load of issues to be addressed.
I attended an excellent Wikidata workshop recently where we edited wikidata names to add gender. This editing was on an identified group of people from the 19th century (I think they were all in the US army), and so it was decided that giving them all 'male' gender was fine. Maybe that it so, but then it does raise the whole question of editing names in this way. With the open data ethos and ability to edit online catalogues such as wikidata, where does that leave a person's right to define their own identity?
all the best,
Jane.
