Dear All,
The Mary Anning letter was auctioned today. The winning bid was
£100,800, a truly astounding price. To that will be added a commission of
25%. The bidding on the letter was to have closed at 14:04 at which time it
reached £75,000. Sotheby's extended the deadline by two minutes, which
proved profitable for the seller and them. I will be watching the news to
see if the bidder remains anonymous.
If there is a silver lining, such a high price may tempt other
letters out of private collections. This one may have been testing the
water. I feel sorry for the Jurassic Coast Trust who valiantly raised a sum
in pledges that should have been more than enough to have returned the
letter to Lyme Regis.
All the best,
John Henry

Presumably everyone is now also aware of the Jurassic Coast Trust crowd
funding bid to raise the money to buy the letter.

Dear All,
I had a look at Mary Anning's letter at Sotheby's yesterday, Sunday,
morning. No photographs or transcribing was permitted. However, I can tell
you that there is no additional information beyond what was in the auction
description and the image extract from her letter. If the letter should
disappear into anonymity again, we do now have all the information she
passed on to Buckland. This morning, the bidding has reached £10,000!
Someone will have a very expensive memento, but we all have the factual
content.
All the best,
John Henry
