Hi everybody!
I’m thrilled to announce the release of my book “Rabies in the Streets: Interspecies Camaraderie in Urban India”.
At the intersection of medical anthropology, Indology and human-animal studies, this book provides a particularly complex portrait of rabies. In New Delhi, the Lyssavirus moves among stray dogs, semi-wild macaques, roaming cattle, slum dwellers, piles of garbage, unburned corpses, decaying carcasses, and feces. Interspecies camaraderie calls for a sustainable, strategic, and all-encompassing association with other life forms. It stems from a non-rhetorical acknowledgement that taking care of others – of forgotten human beings, of sick animals, of ailing environments – is the only way to take care of us all. As humans, our becoming interspecies comrades will show us that we can be better than we have been so far, and free from the horrors of rabies.
