ARC Magazine Diversity Issue – Call for Papers

ARA UK & Ireland are looking for contributions to an edition of ARC Magazine focussing on Diversity and Inclusion, which will be published in November 2020. Diversity is a very wide topic so for this issue we would like contributions focussing on race, ethnicity and cultural issues. 

The lack of diversity in the record-keeping profession continues to be the focus of discussion and debate. However, recent widespread protests around the world in the wake of the murder of George Floyd in the USA and the activism of the Black Lives Matter movement, have renewed calls among record-keepers for collaborative working, practical actions and long-lasting changes that will lead to the diversification of our workforce, our user profiles and our collections.

Whilst we welcome contributions from everyone we especially want to hear from BAME people with lived experience of working in record-keeping and who may feel their voices are not heard. This could be about your work or problems and issues you have faced in qualifying or obtaining work.

This is an opportunity to share your ideas and experiences, and to discuss what positive actions you think archivists, records managers and conservators need to take to effect meaningful and transformative change. 

Contributions could focus on the following topics: 

•	Personal experiences 
•	Diversifying the workforce
•	Engaging with under-represented audiences and users
•	Collecting and collections

Please submit articles of around 400-800 words to [log in to unmask] with the phrase ‘Diversity Issue’ in the subject of the email by Friday 4 September, with accompanying images. 

We are happy to consider shorter pieces, especially if you are submitting a personal account of your experiences in record-keeping. Because of the sensitivity of the topic we are also willing to publish some anonymous contributions but please discuss your requirements with Jenny Moran (detail below). All discussions will be confidential, although decision-making may need to be shared with the editorial team.
