The next webinar run by the Developing, Teaching and Testing Academic Listeners SIG will take place on Friday 24th July from 16:00 to 17:00 via Zoom. The webinar will be on the theme of assessing listening and short presentations from two speakers will be followed by time for discussion. Details on the presentations are as follows:

Carla Morris:
“Listening is regularly tested via note-taking and summary writing - the focus usually being the summary rather than the note-taking. However, summary writing is a complex skill; while useful for assessing writing competency, I would argue that it is less useful as a discrete test for listening. In fact, I would suggest it increases the affective impact of the test on the student. Taking into consideration research in task complexity and related performance, perhaps it is appropriate to re-evaluate this form of assessment as an adequate measure of listening skill.”

Walter Nowlan:
"This “show-and-tell” session reports on a new summative listening-into-speaking test for a pre-sessional EGAP course that was developed in response to concerns about test validity, the need to deliver the test in an online format, and changes made to our listening construct. It will briefly outline the decision-making process and reflect on the first iteration of the test to highlight areas for further consideration.”

To register for the webinar, please provide your details via the form below. Details for the Zoom meeting will be sent to you a few days prior to the webinar:

Another date for your diary: A second webinar on approaches to testing academic listening will be held on Friday 4th September from 16:00-17:00. Further details for that webinar will be sent out in due course.
