Hi Jessica

I believe the UKVI are accepting scanned documents for right to study checks this year as one of the concessions, so we are planning to take advantage of that and move as much online as possible, and hope they continue with this approach going forward. Slight fly in the ointment is that the concessions are to be reviewed on 31 July so they could withdraw it.

We still of course, have the challenge of getting uni ID cards to everyone so this discussion is very useful.

Best wishes

Jo

Hi Aimee

Thanks for the response. We already do online enrolment, it's just the final stage of ID check, which I think is a UKVI requirement for all students, and then issuing the physical student card that has been face to face. We also have been thinking about digital cards, however, as some students use the card to access certain rooms, we'd also need to update all of those rooms that are swipe rather than scan access so I don't think will be entirely possible for this year.

We are considering using an add on to the validate service that our UKVI compliance team use already for new students to upload a copy of their ID, which should work, but we would still need to check that each uploaded piece of ID matches the student record - something we can do and means no face to face checks so not distancing concerns, but not ideal. Also, the logistics of posting out the cards seems tricky. We used an outsource company to print some last year, but it was not very successful so we're not confident how well they'd manage posting too! So if anyone has a recommended company that does this, please feel free to share!

I like the idea of working with accommodation so we may explore that.

Thanks

Hi Jessica

Thanks for getting this conversation going, here at York St John we are also trying to figure this out.

For our new starters in September we are moving to a fully online enrolment process, by doing away with the final stage of the face to face ID check, we may look at building this into the secondary enrolment task by requesting a document upload function. Anyone out there not do an ID check or have alternative ways of checking this?

We have started the conversation of moving to digital ID cards but we may not be able to implement this until next year. We were thinking of working with Accommodation services and including them in student key collection packs, which would distribute a lot of them.

Lots of ideas floating about but nothing concrete yet.
