REMEMBERING THE RUNNING FENCE, REVISITED

We believe in “Once upon a time . . .
We promise it will not be another 33 years before . . .
With the fence, you could still see the lonely tree . . .
whether you like it or not, you are all a part of the project,
well, it was not wholly illegal.
We were illegal aliens for 3 years.
We were living in an illegal building.

Drafted during both the screening of the new film by Wolfram Hissen about the major mid-seventies work and the live Q & A afterwards with Christo. One or more younger doubles of Jeanne-Claude amongst the audience created a haunting resonance. Their son, Cyril, who has published 5 books of poetry (including one entirely focused on his parents’ art), took a seat in the front row. I should have talked to him, but he was invisible during the after-event.
