Dear colleague,

We would like to invite you to participate in the online workshop 'Copyright and Fair Practice - Film Studies', taking place virtually on 7 July at 10:00-12:00. The workshop is part of the pilot project 'Copyright and Fair Practice in Education', a joint collaboration between Learning on Screen, the University of Kent, City University of London, and CREATe (University of Glasgow). It is aimed at identifying and codifying fair practice for teachers using audiovisual works in classroom and online learning.

The workshop will bring together scholars and teachers from Film Studies, with a view to exploring different teaching practices in this area. As we will explain in more detail during the workshop, UK copyright law provides an exception - Section 32, Illustration for instruction - that allows teachers to use existing materials for educational purposes without the need to get permission from the copyright owners. However, this exception has been introduced in UK law in 2014 only and has not been tested in courts yet, so its scope of application is uncertain. How much can be used under this and other exceptions depends mainly on the notion of 'fair dealing', and in the absence of court cases, actual teaching practice can play a crucial role in defining the possibilities offered by this provision. While similar initiatives have been successfully conducted in the United States around fair use, this is the first project that tries to capture fair practice in education under UK copyright law.

We will share joining instructions as well as more detailed documentation closer to the date. In the meantime, please let us know whether you would be available and interested to participate in the workshop on 7 July or if you have any questions. You can register for the workshop here.

Thanks and best wishes,

Bartolomeo Meletti - Learning on Screen / CREATe, University of Glasgow - [log in to unmask]

Chris Morrison - University of Kent - [log in to unmask]

Jane Secker - City, University of London - [log in to unmask]

Dear Colleagues,

I hope that this finds you well.

I am sure that all MeCCSA members have followed with interest the ongoing discussion regarding access to online screenings/resources. The topic of resources more broadly was already on our agenda , having been discussed at our Academic Subcommittee and via the Executive online, in anticipation of our next Executive Committee meeting which takes place on 12th June. At that meeting we will be discussing the practicalities and use-value, during times when information is so quickly superceded, of establishing resource-sharing platforms for various types of content relevant to our professional lives during COVID .

In the meantime, we remain convinced that this Jiscmail list is an excellent forum for the pooling of resources and the exchange of professional knowledge on this topic. Our members are our best resource. So thank you for sharing.

 With Best Wishes, Anita
