Thanks for sharing Christine.

We are in the process of looking at what we can offer the education market going forward here at Llancaiach Fawr Manor.

We have had conversations with teachers giving almost identical answers to those in your survey.

It is clearly going to take a lot of careful planning to address this issue!

Hi all,

I did a teacher's survey last month using the Horniman Museum's school enewsletter contact list. I had 30 responses. Some of the questions are Horniman specific but I am sharing here as it might be useful to some of you.

Thanks,

Christine

Hello all, from a rainy Hertfordshire!

I have been undertaking teacher interviews over the phone recently on how they might want to work with or be able to engage with us as partners in future and it has been priceless to how I am considering our future plans.

One thing I have certainly found is that optimising personal connections has meant they are able to give really specific responses to the kind of programme we are offering or able to offer in future and help guide me without it feeling generic because they know the museums and the learning offer we had. Also, what has become clear is I am likely to have to go back to these partners a few times to gauge their situation as it continues to develop at a significant pace.

For what it's worth I think what would possibly be more useful than a weighty survey nationwide and if GEM had the capacity, would be to provide a suggested list of questions/template that might be more practically useful for individuals museums to tailor as they see fit. For example, if small museums cannot afford or have the capacity for significant virtual/digital offers they may not want to be asking that question to manage user expectations and not feel as though other museums then may be streets ahead and feel worried about maintaining engagement and income. It important to note too that for furloughed colleagues could be anxious about this and not want to be left feeling as though they are behind if a lot of surveying is done whilst many learning teams are unable to work on a response.

I would be happy to share the questions I have asked so far and have had a few conversations with peers through networks I have connected with on social media in museums who may well be reading this now (Colchester and Ipswich Museums and I are talking later today in fact!) about setting up some kind of informal peer support group. Devon/Rachel drop me a line if any of the above sounds useful and I can be of help!

Keep well everyone

Best wishes

Eleanor

At this unprecedented time the arts, heritage and culture sector needs your support more than ever.

If you are in a position to do so, please make a donation to help St Albans Museums.

During this emergency, your generous donation via the St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust will let us plan ahead; help fund our future activity; and allow us to support our arts partners and colleagues.

Thank you for your ongoing support and patience.

Hi Heather and Gem

This would be very easy to do on a Survey Monkey and could be a great thing for GEM to do and then everyone could distribute it and the results could be analysed according to both geography and type of museums. I am currently working for Ipswich Museum and have just such a survey being responded to at the moment: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/J3J6CPF Although it is about the future development of the museum it does also include questions about their responses to C-19 and so far I have had over 40 responses - so teachers are happy to respond to surveys at the moment!

I am currently carrying out online Focus Groups for a variety of projects and they certainly lack the depth of discussion of face to face focus groups. So I have been substituting them with one to tone phone calls instead.

It seems like a great campaigning tool for GEM to support as it would help museums to adapt to the Covid-19 and also the future.

Best wishes

Hi Sarah,

This seems like a good idea, though I’m not quite sure where we’d start?

(Rhetorical question) I know that we are. Could we get together as GEM and send out a survey to schools about what they imagine their position to be for the autumn term, what they want from us, how much technology they want to use, when they might start visiting again, the financial position, etc? It seems rather daft for dozens of us to be doing the same thing all over the country right now, when what we need to know is fairly similar and could be shared.

I would like to conduct a focus group (or send a survey) with some teachers to ensure what we do is useful. I just wondered if anyone else had done something similar and if so what sort of questions you asked?
