Hello
Here at York, we're taking a moment to reflect on how the online assessments we suddenly had to set up (along with everyone else in the sector) went and how we can improve going forward. Clearly online assessments are here to stay.
I'd really like to hear from colleagues about their experience of using online assessments:
Which system did you use?
Blackboard
How you coped with time differences eg we had 24 hour assessments?
The majority of our exams were held as "open book" 24 hour exams. For some of our professional body exams (eg actuarial sciences) we had to set the exams up with a set duration (not 24 hours).
Residential wardens offered support out of office hours (less than 10 students contacted them).
How you handled adjustments for students with Support Plans?
We adapted the formatting of exam papers with headings so the content could be accessed via assistive software in place of a reader.
Otherwise an inclusive approach was taken so students could self-manage all other exam concessions e.g. extra time, rest break time, ergonomic equipment.
Level of proctoring involved?
Nil
Key learning from the experience/anything you'd do differently?
Going forward we will regularly review FAQs on website to ensure they remain current. These were used by a lot of students both in advance and on the day of their assessment.
There are some challenges yet to be overcome with subjects that cannot format the scientific or mathematical content of their papers to make them accessible via assistive software. One possibility would be to have an academic record them reading the content of such a paper where a student is known to have use of a reader for exams.
Some challenges with the use of Blackboard learn which will need to be resolve prior to the next period of exams (eg reassessment) (eg students getting a receipt when they submit their work - which works for CW submissions, but not yet for EX submissions)
We need to review the deadline dates for when we ask academics to provide exam papers to our Exams Team. We could create more time into the exam paper creation/submission process, if the Exams Team are no longer expected to print large volumes of exam papers, then count them and pack them into various venue bags in time for a sit down exam.
I know this is a very busy time for colleagues so I appreciate your taking the time to read this and hopefully respond.
If you'd like me to share the responses I get, please let me know.
Thanks in advance
Sharmila
