Dear colleague,

As many other conferences and symposia this year, MFTS has also been hit by the Covid-19 issues and the subsequent necessary restrictions. Even if we are gradually returning to our activities, and Luxembourg is one of the countries listed as those with consistent R<1 scores for a few weeks now, travels to and from the country in July will remain restricted, so it will likely be in other countries.

The MFTS spirit relies on presentations and discussions of timely and focused topics in a symposium setting, so we have been thinking of different solutions to keep the right flavor. This suggested us to keep the original dates, but also we wanted to preserve and keep in mind the social/networking opportunities which have been strongly appreciated in the first two editions. Therefore, it is our intention to organise a 3rd MFTS physical gathering in summer 2021, if this will finally be allowed. We are discussing the details of this back-to-back event (location, date to be defined soon) with the possibility to anchor it to other international happenings, considering that 2021 will become very popular for conferences, if Covid allows...

A more detailed plan will follow soon with the exact symposium programme, but we can already anticipate a few highlights of the format:

- The event will be on July 6 and 7 2020 and is free of charge

- It will be open to anyone worldwide, provided (s)he is registered to the event through our registration page. You can already register on our website<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmfts20.gforge.uni.lu%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7C8987af5d749b4a48564208d7fcd6d285%7C1faf88fea9984c5b93c9210a11d9a5c2%7C0%7C0%7C637255871910055735&sdata=b1cYwwKRKCdACsnxPaFPPcnExDPdZWWERiqIi5DeqAM%3D&reserved=0> or by directly filling the form here<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fforms%2Fd%2Fe%2F1FAIpQLSeMPtEsUXhmLfazGuyy56ARMNGua1G_hENvAdBn_JeInX7FHw%2Falreadyresponded&data=02%7C01%7C%7C8987af5d749b4a48564208d7fcd6d285%7C1faf88fea9984c5b93c9210a11d9a5c2%7C0%7C0%7C637255871910055735&sdata=DsVtd1v5duUHU9p8tMBhLhPui9X9idVoVkR2EQ8D308%3D&reserved=0>. Please contact [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> or me in case you have issues with the registration page (e.g. no access to Google forms pages).

- Presentations will be posted online a week before the conference dates with different formats (power point / pdf, full papers, videos)

- We will open thematic virtual rooms where a moderator/chairman will give presenters in the rooms the possibility to pitch their work, and will coordinate a panel discussion on the theme of the room, manage the Q&A between presenters and participants,…

- There will be ‘plenary’ sessions in between the thematic sessions with keynote presentations.

In addition, we plan to keep the original plan for the Special Issue in Transportation Research Part C, to be launched in September and with deadline in January 2021.

Please visit regularly our website to see updates and to get all information about the programme.

We look forward to engaging on nice discussions with you in July, and hopefully to see you physically soon!

Francesco Viti on behalf of the MFTS2020 Local Organising Committee

Dear colleague,

The Symposium in a nutshell

As Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) are being progressively introduced in our transport and mobility systems, there is a growing need to understand the implications and opportunities for an enhanced traffic management as well as to identify innovative ways and tools to optimize traffic efficiency. Motivated by this increased attention, in 2016 the 1st Symposium on Management of Future Motorway and Urban Traffic Systems was organized in Chania (Greece) by the Technical University of Crete. The second edition was then hosted by the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra (Italy) in 2018, adopting a more traditional format of an open call for contributions. The main emphasis remains on engaging in open discussions, and creating a community of experts and relevant stakeholders that will collaborate to identify the challenges and propose solutions for managing future transport systems.

As continuation of the first two editions, the MFTS2020 will focus on future traffic management systems, covering the subjects of traffic control, estimation, and modelling of motorway and urban networks, with particular emphasis on the presence of advanced vehicle communication and automation technologies. The conference will particularly put emphasis on challenges and solutions for urban traffic systems and for motorways by organizing in two parallel tracks, the first aiming to highlight the importance of managing multimodal systems and urban traffic controls, the second targeting research and showcasing of motorway management with an increased presence of connected and autonomous vehicles.

Topics covered in the symposium

· Traffic Management in the Presence of CAVs

· Dynamic models for CAVs (Micro and Macroscopic level)

· Traffic Management and Coordinated Systems

· Coordinated, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM)

· Advanced Vehicle Control and Safety Systems

· Human Behavior and Acceptance in the Presence of CAVs

· Incidence Management and Control

· Multimodal Systems Modeling and Management

· Advanced Urban Traffic Control with Connected Technologies

· C-ITS applications in traffic and transport management

· Network estimation and control using V2X communication
