Dear all
Thank you for your responses. I only saw this late last night via a tweet from someone else. It is buried, undated in the news of the RCM website. This means very few members of the RCM or anyone would see it. I can only assume, generously, that they did not want to detract from the announcements of the awards at this time and the midwives and nurses day celebrations.
I agree with Jane, that the term I should have used is 'lost' rather than 'losing' control of the profession. This has been occurring since the days of the ENB, for those who remember, and includes education. I am so pleased to hear that the LME's are going to respond to this. We have allowed this to happen, and have allowed this law to take place. I appreciate those who challenged this at the time. I would also like to know the response of the NMC midwifery committee in this, who of course, are being further marginalised by this action.
I don't think that a petition will help- though raising the ridiculous situation to the public and press at this time may be a way of response. The midwives on the frontline at this moment will not be reading emails or seeing on twitter. As with most changes that have taken place in recent years most have not realised until after it has happened. it is frustrating that this has to take away from the brilliant response to COVID that has taken place with everyone pulling together. I am fully aware how the ARM have challenged this for many years and the idea of being outside nursing in a different regulatory body would be welcomed. Advising everyone to cancel membership from the NMC would mean a collapse of care at this time, which would also be wrong I believe.
I sent a tweet copying our CMO in and I intend to try and copy her directly. I feel we need to have a strong message from her and those in all areas of leadership, as Gill has done, that this is not acceptable. But, I reiterate, it is enshrined in law, and we allowed it. If we get a way forward I believe insisting at least equal representation on the council of both professional groups.
I will keep you informed of any further information I find out
regards
Jenny
