The Statistics and Data Science group<https://www.brunel.ac.uk/mathematics/research-and-phd-programmes/Departmental-research-groups/Statistics-and-Data-Science-Research-Group> at Brunel University, London, invites applications for PhD degrees from suitably
qualified candidates. Funding is available for eligible candidates.

The group has interest in many areas of statistical methods and models for data science, with recent contributions in the field of design and analysis of experiments, high-dimensional statistics, inference under censoring and missing data, regression analysis beyond mean, applied Bayesian inference, statistics of networks and machine learning for complex data situations.

The group is undergoing a rapid expansion. We started a Masters programme in Statistics with Data Analytics<https://www.brunel.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/Statistics-with-Data-Analytics-MSc> in 2017-18 and we anticipate continued growth in this area in coming years, as we develop a new undergraduate programme in Mathematics for Data Science, to be delivered simultaneously in Brunel and in Beijing (through our partners at North China University of Technology). This will further increase the staff numbers and the research strength in 2020-21.

EPSRC Studentships

Applications are invited for our EPSRC funded Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) PhD studentships starting 1st October 2020. Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend (bursary) of £17,285 plus payment of their full-time home tuition fees for a period of 36 months (3 years).

These DTP PhD studentships are available to support research within the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences, which includes Mathematics, and the Statistics and Data Science Group.

Eligibility for funding

Applicants will have or be expected to receive a first or upper-second class honours degree in an Engineering, Computer Science, Design, Mathematics, Physics or a similar numerate discipline. A Postgraduate Masters degree is not required but may be an advantage.

Applicants must be eligible for home tuition fees through either nationality, residency (living in the UK for at least three years and not wholly for educational purposes) or other connection to the UK.

PhD applications are welcome in the following areas:

  * High-dimensional Bayesian Learning;

  * Learning in the Absence of Training Data;

  * Applications in Astronomy, Materials Science, etc. using MCMC-based inference;

  * Random Geometric Graphs & Networks;
